Saying Good-bye

As we stood over her lying in peace,
we realize that this horrible disease has put her at rest .
Seeing her look so peaceful and better than she has been in years
makes us see the beauty she use to give to us everyday.

The salty water dripping down our faces and leaking into our mouths,
My grandpa’s shaking hands hugs us all and reminds us it will be okay.
When he is the one who needs the comfort the most because his only companion is gone,
Seeing the hurt and confusion gets me lost in my dad’s eyes

Is this really happening? How are things going to be better?
My heart is feeling colder than this cold February morning.
Remembering her before her disease comes so much clearer to me,
the way she would take me everywhere and give me everything.

Touching her cold peaceful hand one last time stays in my memory so deep.
The cold tears feel the tension of breaking out even more as we stand quietly
Watching the casket close and seeing her beautiful face one last time.
Her memory will never fade away, and only time will heal my family’s and my hearts.

Longer Short Story-Birthday Secrets

Hannah was seventeen today, and felt more like an adult than she ever had. She had everything a girl could dream, best friends, loving parents, a beautiful house, and a boyfriend who gave her everything. And today she was going to have a more fabulous birthday than she ever has had before.
“Hannah, come downstairs.” Her mother called.
“What’s up?” Hannah said concerned.
“So tonight, the limo will be here around seven and you have it until midnight.”
“Okay, I’m so excited, all the girls are coming over around five than the guys a little after.”
“How many people do you think?”
“There are seven girls including me and eight guys.”
“Sounds good, dear!”
“I’m going to get ready mom” Hannah states and runs back upstairs. As she arrives to her room she sees she has a missed call from her boyfriend, Skyler. As she returns his call she realizes his line is busy again. “I’m sure it wasn’t important.” Hannah mumbles and gets back to curling her hair.
As her phone vibrates impatiently on the vanity Hannah sets her curling iron down and picks up the phone.
“Hi Babe Happy Birthday.”
“Hi Skyler, You’ve told me six times already that it’s my birthday!”
“I know but just incase you forgot I wanted to tell you again. What time should I come over tonight?”
“Around six.”
“Sounds perfect, is something wrong?”
“No nothing”
“Okay good I’ll see you tonight, love you.” Click. The phone hangs up and Hannah says to herself, “Nothing is wrong, except I’m secretly dating your best friend.”
Hannah has been confused for two months now on what she wants, it is hard to choose. Both of the guys are athletic, smart, and cute. But they are both best friends and everything has to be kept a secret. Hannah thinks that tonight would be the best night to admit her secret, but a part of her doesn’t think so. Landon is his name, and he is Skyler’s best friend. They have always had a thing for each other, and Skyler can’t help to get jealous, but if he knew about the random hook ups and late night calls he would freak.
Hannah’s bed room door swings open
“Hey Girl!” Hannah’s best friend, Janna screams while giving Hannah a huge hug.
“Hi! I’m so excited for tonight”
“Me too! Were going to be driving around in the limo with everyone. I’m so glad your parents decided you to rent the limo. ”
“I think I’m going to tell everyone tonight Jay, I can’t keep this secret from Skyler anymore.”
“Not tonight Han, this is your birthday party, we don’t need drama more than the usual.”
“Your right, It was a stupid idea anyways.”
“Your little sneaking around is a stupid thing, you knew that from the beginning.”
“I know but I couldn’t help my self”
“You always want what you can’t have, now speaking of what I can’t have is that the dress you’re going to wear tonight? Wow. I’m jealous.”
“You like? Help me put it on please I can’t zip it from behind!”
As Janna helps Hannah put on her dress, Hannah thinks hard and long. What do I want? I love Skyler, but on the other hand Landon makes me feel so good about myself.
Beep Beep. A horn from the distance sounds as Hannah’s other friends all arrive and her mom is eagerly taking snap shots of every move of everyone.
“Cheese” says Kate, Hannah’s most outgoing and wild friend.
“The guys are on their way!” said Emma.
Hannah’s mom takes pictures of all the girls in their beautiful short dresses all in different colors and jewels. It’s almost perfect of how good all the girls look. Skyler pulls up and parks his car as the other guys follow. Skyler gives Hannah a kiss on the check as Landon is staring right at her with jealous eyes. Hannah feels evil, what is she doing leading two guys on? Not to mention two guys who are best friends with each other. She felt horrible, but she couldn’t let this horrible feeling ruin her night, not tonight. As Skyler gives her another hug she feels his phone vibrate.
“Who is it Sky?”
“It’s just my mom, she is worried as usual.”
“No it is not, I just saw on your screen message from Tina?”
“Oh I guess It isn’t from my mom.” Trying to sound like he didn’t know
“Can I see?” As Hannah grabs his phone she steadily starts reading through all the messages.“What is this?” Hannah yells.
“What is what? She just asks me for homework help.”
“You’re a liar, I thought I could trust you again but I was wrong. Your so perfect to my face and behind ugh, I don’t understand. All these messages are about hooking up before all your football games?”
“Babe, stop. It’s a joke the messages, we just make fun and kid around we don’t actually hang out.”
“You know what? I really can’t trust you and I haven’t for along time, I think I was just in love with the Sky from a year ago. I can’t do this-“
Skyler interrupts, “Babe no your perfect, You don’t want to be done.”
“Actually I’m not perfect, I’ve kept stuff from you too I am just better at keeping things, and yes I do want to be done. I’m not in love with you anymore.”
“Is there someone else?”
Hannah looks around and spots Landon, he looks scared, he always told Hannah he wanted to tell everyone but he didn’t want to loose his friendship with Skyler. Hannah realizes she can’t date Landon, and shouldn’t tell everyone, it’s just not fair.
“No skyler, there is no one else. And I don’t think there will be anyone else for awhile.”
Skyler hugs Hannah and whispers “I’m sorry.” She couldn’t do the I’m sorry stuff anymore, friendship was what she felt in this hug and friendship was all she felt.
“It’s okay. Let’s just all have fun tonight in the limo, everyone, as friends.”
“I guess I deserve that.” As a tear runs down Skyler’s check. He messed up again and he knew it, Hannah gave him so many chances and he took it for granted, now that she just wants to be friends he is learning how to accept it but he doesn’t think he ever will. He loves Hannah, and no one else, he just couldn’t keep not talking to other girls behind her back. He knew it wasn’t right, but now he realizes it was a mistake and he didn’t want to talk to any other girl but Hannah, it was too late. As he watches Hannah with all her friends taking pictures by the limo he feels a tear run down his check.
“As long as she is happy.” He mumbles.
“Let’s go!” Hannah screams with excitement.
Landon turns to Hannah.
“Thanks for not saying anything now Hannah, I just think it is too soon for him to know. I can’t loose him as a friend, but I can’t loose you either.”
“You won’t” Hannah says with a smile “Some things just take time. Our little secret, at least for awhile?” She asks.
“Just for awhile.” He says and winks
“Skyler let’s go!” Landon yells.
“Bye! Bye! Have fun! Be careful! Take a lot of pictures!” Hannah’s mother yells while waving and still snaping pictures.

JADE
No I didn‘t, It’s just I’m so upset all he does is cancels our plans.
SOPHIE
If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a million times he doesn’t like you the way like you like him.
JADE
Yes he does, we are perfect for-
COFFEE WORKER
What can I get you ladies?
SOPHIE
A medium white mocha with a shot of cameral please.
JADE
And I’ll have a small latte.
COFFEE WORKER
Alright, It comes to $8.49.
[JADE reaches in her purse]
SOPHIE
I got it Jade, It’s my treat. [hands cashier money]
JADE
Thanks! I owe you.
COFFEE WORKER
Here you go ladies, [hands drinks] and enjoy!
JADE
Thank you… Let’s go sit down over there.. It is way to cold to even think of going outside right now.
[Both girls sit down on a couch at the coffee place by the warm fire]
SOPHIE
Jade you know I love you, we’ve been best friends since 7th grade, you know I wouldn’t just say stuff about a guy you like for no reason, you know?
JADE
I know.. But I just picture Derek as being so perfect.. Expect for the fact he does cancel plans with me a lot.. But he’s busy with college and I understand that.
SOPHIE
I just wish you could see what I see Jay.. Then you would really understand who he is.
JADE
Or you could see what I see in him… [silent pause] Sick, look at that creeper sitting over there pretending he is reading that newspaper.
SOPHIE
Gross, why do people like that even come out in the day?
JADE
I can ‘t stop staring at him, I’ve never seen someone look so odd.
[CREEPY MAN notices girls are staring and gives a odd dirty look]
JADE
I think he saw me staring. [laughs out loud]
SOPHIE
Jade I think your phone is vibrating.
JADE
[grabbing her phone out of her purse]
John, Hey!….[listening] Yeah… Well I can call you later or something if my plans change, I got to go though, bye.
SOPHIE
Jade!

What?
SOPHIE
Your so mean to him, he is one of the nicest guys out there on campus, and all you do is be a jerk to him! He is crazy for you and you know it. I don’t understand you sometimes.
JADE
You know what Sophie, [pauses and talks quieter] I don’t understand myself either.
SOPHIE
So why did Derek cancel dinner for your what… your first kiss anniversary or what was it? [laughs]
JADE
Shut up Sophie [pushes SOPHIE a little and giggles] It’s our first date anniversary, actually.
SOPHIE
Psh.. Your pathetic, just kidding.. But seriously. [laughs]
JADE
Oh stop your just jealous… And he said his room mates and all the guys were getting together for poker night and they’ve been planning it for awhile. I’m fine with it.
SOPHIE
Oh yeah I’m sure their just all sitting around playing poker. [sounding sarcastic]
JADE
I’m getting kind of creped out in here that guy keeps looking over here and the snow storm outside looks horrible.
SOPHIE
Yeah, I really don’t want to be stuck in here for the night because we got snowed in here.
JADE
I’ll call Derek to pick us up because there is no way were walking back to our dorms in this.
[Picks up phone and starts dialing]
“Hi Derek! What are you do- [pauses] I’m sorry I didn’t mean to call but I thought you could pick me up from the Coffee shop down the street from your dorm because it is snowing pretty hard… Oh okay, It’s fine. [sounds disappointed] Call me later bye.”
He can’t pick us up because he already started drinking.
SOPHIE
That is some bull right there, all he does is lie. Who starts drinking at 7:30? There is going to be like some huge blizzard outside and Derek doesn’t care that we don’t have a ride home.
JADE
I know, I agree something weird is going on.
SOPHIE
We’ll have to try to find another ride soon. You should call John?
JADE
That’s a good idea.. I should. [picks up phone again and starts dialing]
“Hey! What are you up to? [pauses] Oh.. Your with the guys?.. [pauses] Well I was just wondering Me and Sophie are going to be soon stuck in the Coffee shop if it keeps snowing this hard and we walked here and we kind of were wondering if you could pick us up, but I understand you can’t its okay. [pauses] Your going to what? Leave? No its ok- [pauses] See you soon John, you’re a life savor.”
SOPHIE
He’s coming?
JADE
Yup.
SOPHIE
See jay, not all men are jerks you know.. They actually get out there and do something for someone. Well before John comes I think I’m going to go outside and have my evening cigarette.
JADE
Sophie that is so gross and bad for you. Sick, I will wait in here.
[Sophie goes outside and lights up her cigarette]


VOICE FROM THE DISTANCE

SOPHIE
Excuse me? No.

[squinting hard to see the man in the dark]

SOPHIE
DEREK! I knew it! You are a rat! I thought you were drinking, Why are you out just walking around? [runs inside and grabs Jade and pulls her outside]
Look Jade! Derek right there sitting on that bench. He’s trying to pick up women.
JADE
Derek, why are you here? I thought you were with your guys, and drinking?
DEREK
Oh I am [trying to act drunk]
JADE
Your so faking it, I’m not a moron I know when your faking it which is like 90 percent of the time.
[John appears]
Hi John, Thank you for coming.
JOHN
No problem, Oh hey Derek.
DEREK
Wasss up? [ still trying to act drunk ]
JOHN
Ha ha you should cut that act out Derek, your not drunk, I saw you at the dorm 15 minutes ago and you were by your self, and you weren’t drinking.
[Jade gets a confused look in her face]
SOPHIE
All you are is a liar Derek and you know it.
[Derek’s phone starts ringing. He glances and it and pretends to ignore it.]
JADE
Here Derek, I’ll answer that since your so drunk.
[grabs phone]
Hello?… [pause] …Oh no this is just Derek’s ex-girlfriend.. I’ll tell him your expecting him over, good bye.
DEREK
Ex-girlfriend?!
JADE
Yes Derek, ex girlfriend. My true friends have been trying to get things through my head I didn’t let get through until tonight, when you weren’t there for me when I needed you. Were done.
[walks back in the coffee house, and Sophie and John follow]
SOPHIE
I’m proud of you, I love you. It’s going to be okay. [hugs Jade]
JADE
Thanks guys, you guys are great friends [a tear runs down her face when John catches it]
JOHN
Don’t cry because its over, smile because something new has begun.
JADE
Your right John. [hugs John]
I think that something new that has begun has been standing in front of me for a long time and I’ve been to stupid to realize.
JOHN
I think your right, I’ve been right here.
SOPHIE
Well since you two are happy, lets go to a party tonight and find a man for me!
JOHN

The Car Ride

JADE
This sucks.

SOPHIE

That creep behind us has been following us the whole way and is driving right on my bumper.. My god, people these days do not know how to drive.

SOPHIE
Tap your breaks a little, scare him.

JADE
[taps break while laughing]

SOPHIE
He looks pissed.. Jade I think your phone is vibrating

Car screeches and swerves off the road.

Oh my God! What do I do!

SOPHIE
Breaks! Stop! Just pull over now.

[Pulls car over and car is completely stopped]
That creeper behind us is stopping too. Lock the door, now.

[man approaches the girls window on the driver seat side.]
Maybe he can help us?

SOPHIE
Yeah.. Or kill us? [says sarcastically but scared]

JADE

Hi. Were fine. Thank you. [not making eye contact]

FRANK
You don’t look fine.. You look like two girls who need help changing a flat tire.

SOPHIE

JADE
Sophie! [nudges her shoulder] What are you getting us into!?

Do I look like I change tires? Psh, no.. So he can.

FRANK
I’m Frank.. Sorry about my driving so close, I’m just so use to driving fast because I use to be in NASCAR racing and going on freeways its hard not to go fast. Here let me get your spare and I’ll get started changing your tire, and you’ll be out of here in no time!

JADE
Um.. Thank you, Frank.

FRANK
Anytime. You girls wait in the car, it is too cold for you to be out here.

[JADE gets in the car and slams the door. Realizes phone is vibrating, again]

SOPHIE
Ignore it. Your not talking to Derek this time.

JADE
What do you think he needs or wants?

SOPHIE
He probably wants to tell you he is cheating on you with 5 different girls is my guess.

[awkward silence, Frank approaches car]

FRANK
Well I’m all done girls, Your lucky to know how good I am with my hands, that was a record timing for changing a tire.

JADE
Thank you, How can we repay you?

FRANK
Well my car has been acting very rough and weird when I drive it. And I don’t want to risk driving it, would you mind giving me a ride home? I just live right off this exit up here.

SOPHIE
Sure, Jade would love to, we would love to!

JADE
[whispering] What are you doing Sophie, we don’t even know this man?

SOPHIE
[whispering back] He’s famous, he’s hot, give him a ride. Trust me.

JADE
Sure… I can give you a ride. [sounding confused]

FRANK
Thanks a lot, let me grab my stuff from my car.

JADE
I hope you know what your doing.

FRANK
Ok.. Thanks a lot girls. [slams the door and buckles up]

[JADE starts ignition multiple times while car does still not start]

JADE
Well isn’t this lovely. Let me call my parents or something.
[dials number on cell phone]
Great.. No answer… I’ll call Derek.

SOPHIE
Great.. just what we need a stupid cheating liar to pick us up.

JADE
Oh Sophie.. Stop.
[dials number on cell phone, again and puts on speaker]
Hi Derek, hi.

DEREK
Hi hun, whats up? Why are you calling I thought I told you I would call you later tonight after I wasn’t hanging with the guys.

SOPHIE
[turns around to Frank] Psh.. The guys, yeah right.

JADE
Well I wasn’t going to call sugar bee, but I need help. I got a flat tire and some man helped us change it, and then when I tried to start the car it won’t start so now were stuck here sitting on the side of the freeway.

DEREK
Baby, Keep trying to start the car.. You know I would help you but I have been drinking already and I can’t drive now. Look, just try to have you or Sophie try to jump start it with someone else’s car I’m sure it will all work out. I got to go. I’ll call you after. Bye.

SOPHIE
And you call him the one? Jade, something is the matter with you.

JADE
You know what? I’ll call John. [dials numbers on phone]
Hi John, Its Jade. Look we need some help.. My car won’t start I’m on freeway 10...[pause].. Thank you! See you soon.

FRANK
I’m sorry girls I wish I could have been more help. If you’ll excuse me I just have to get something out of my bag.

[Jade and Sophie look at each other in confusion]

SOPHIE
Why do you have a mask on from like Halloween?

FRANK
So no one can see me.

SOPHIE

FRANK

JADE
Oh my God! We-

FRANK
You open the door, I will take my car and run you both over. You move or try to do something that I didn’t say, I will kill. Listen to me.

[Complete silence. All you can hear is breathing from the girls.]

I was not a NASCAR driver. I am a psycho and I hate women. i HATE them.

[JADE shakes in fear]

JADE
What can we do sir for you?

[Knocks on window from outside]

JADE SOPHIE
AHHHH!! AHHHH!!

[Girls turn and realize it is John at the window]

JADE
John! Open up, hurry!

JOHN
What’s going on here?

FRANK
Silence. Another word, I will kill.

JOHN
With what? Your big strong arms [sounds sarcastic] Why don’t you just take off the mask and start acting like a human before I call the police.

FRANK
Look.. All I want is some attention. I thought if I could scare some harmless women I could feel a little better about myself.

JOHN
You’re a sick man dude. That is disturbing, scaring women?

JADE
He did change our flat tire John, He was nice until he just started getting creepy.

FRANK
Look I don’t mean no harm, well kind of I do, but it is just in my blood I guess. I am just dangerous. And I don’t hate women, I love ‘em. I wish I could get a girl for myself, but with my charm the only thing I can get is innocent women clueless about changing tires.

SOPHIE
Look Mr. Frank dude, My mom is a therapist, We can get you help, and hopefully a woman. But you can’t go around scaring innocent people, it is just well it is weird. If you’ll excuse me I got to take it outside. All this stress, I think I got to have a cigarette.

[Goes outside and stands by front of the car and lights up her cigarette]

Honk from horn driving on the freeway and pulls over suddenly in front

Voice from the distance

Whooo, Are you from Tennesse?

SOPHIE
Excuse me? No.

Voice from the distance

SOPHIE
Who are you?
[squinting hard to see the man walking towards her in the dark]

Voice from the distance

SOPHIE
Derek! I knew it! Jade, get out here now!

JADE gets out of the car and walks toward SOPHIE

JADE
Oh hey Derek. I thought you were drinking? You shouldn’t be driving.

JOHN
Whets up Derek?

SOPHIE
Jade, he just tried hitting on me. He lies about everything. Why don’t you believe me ever, especially on something this important. I wouldn’t just make it up.

JADE
Derek is it true?
DEREK
No baby.. You know it-
[Derek’s phone rings as he looks at it trying to ingore the call.]

JADE
Why don’t I get that…? Derek, phone please.
[Derek hands phone]
Hello?… [pause] …Oh no this is just Derek’s ex-girlfriend.. I’ll tell him your expecting him over now, good bye.

DEREK

JADE

[Jade walks away back to the car followed by Sophie and John]

JADE
Frank, Thanks for the biggest scare of my life, and the biggest eye opener also. True friends are hard to find, and sometimes the people who are right for you are right in front of your eyes. I love you Sophie.

SOPHIE
I love you too girl, but who are you talking about.. Right in front of you?

JADE
John.. I think there is someone out there for everyone.. And I haven’t realized until now, but you have always been that someone to me.

JOHN
I thought you would never feel the same way I do Jade. You’re the one girl I’ve always wanted.

[John and Jade Hug]

FRANK
So Sophie, what do you say about there is one person out there for everyone? I think I know mine..

SOPHIE
Um Ew, Okay no. You are seeing my mother this week for help.

FRANK
Hey Sophie?

SOPHIE
Yeah?

FRANK
Will you be my friend?

SOPHIE
Yeah Frank, I will.
